Mushroom workshops with Lucy & Bex
This year, Lucy and Bex have brought their brilliant foraging workshops to North Cumbria — and I’ve been lucky enough to attend a few, both as a photographer and an eager participant.
I’ve always wanted to learn more about the wild foods growing all around us but it can feel overwhelming to know where to begin. Lucy and Bex make it easy. Their workshops are perfect for beginners and those already on their foraging journey. Their depth of knowledge is incredible, and the amount they pack into just a few hours is seriously impressive.
These photos were taken in Milton Rigg Woods and Milton Village Hall. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with jars of herbs, reusable teabags, shelves of books, and the most beautiful mushroom displays — dried, soaking, and utterly fascinating.
After exploring the woods, it’s back to the hall for homemade food (the mushroom risotto is out of this world). As the afternoon unfolds, you’ll sample treats such as mushroom hot chocolate, jerky, chocolates, and teas — each one delicious and full of earthy goodness.
Then comes the hands-on part: making your own mushroom tinctures, salves and balms, natural remedies to take home. It’s such a fun, grounding experience — a day that slows you down, connects you to nature, and leaves you feeling nourished.
I loved it so much that I quickly booked my mum and daughter onto the mushroom medicine course (they adored it too). You also get a fantastic PDF guide full of information — perfect if, like me, you’re not the best note-taker.
Come rain or shine, the workshops go ahead, so bring your waterproofs. However, many of my favourite photos were taken in the drizzle, capturing the true spirit of the experience.
